What is Biohazard? How is it cleaned?

Biohazard is related to the presence of biological pathogens that cause infectious diseases in humans. Most biological agents are microscopic living beings, invisible to the naked eye. They include:

• Viruses
• Parasites
• Fungi

They are present everywhere: in living things, in the environment and in the workplace. The risk of infection can result from either industrial or accidental contact.

The 4 Levels of Biohazards

Biological agents are classified into four groups. Those are separated according to the degree of risk of infection they pose:

• Group 1 includes biological agents that are not likely to cause disease in humans.
• Group 2 includes biological agents that are capable of causing disease in humans and pose a hazard to humans. Their spread in the community is unlikely. Effective prophylaxis or treatment is generally available.
• Group 3 includes biological agents that can cause serious disease in humans and pose a serious hazard to humans. Their spread in the community is possible. But effective prophylaxis or treatment is generally available.
• Group 4 includes biological agents that cause serious illness in humans and constitute a serious hazard to humans. The risk of their spread in the community is high. Effective prophylaxis or treatment is generally not available.

The biological risk must be assessed and specific prevention measures put in place. Depending on the occupational sector, there are different levels at which action can be taken on:

• The reservoir of biological agents
• Their modes of transmission
• The entry points into the body

In all cases, individual hygiene measures remain essential.

 

What are the risks involved?

Health impacts are highly variable and will depend,  among other things:

• On the biological agent involved
• On the conditions of exposure
• On individual factors

Infections are the best known impacts. They are not the only ones involved. There are four types of health effects. They can result from exposure to biological agents:

• Infections
• Immuno-allergic effects
• Toxic effects
• Cancers

There is a risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens and biohazards. Those are ranging from viruses such as hepatitis to bacteria such as MRSA. They are occuring in the event of a death or accident where blood is present.

 

How is it cleaned?

Unlike the conventional method of cleaning houses or businesses, biohazard clean-up requires:

• Appropriate certifications
